Suspected armed hoodlums have invaded the female hostel of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, stealing phones and other valuables from students during a late-night operation.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday at the university’s Gubi Campus, where the attackers reportedly entered the hostel around 2:00 a.m. and moved from room to room, threatening students before making away with their belongings.
Reports indicated that more than 10 rooms were affected, with dozens of mobile phones and other personal items stolen. Some students also alleged that the attackers gained access to the hostel by cutting through the perimeter fence and using a ladder to enter the premises.
The attack has caused fear and anxiety among students, with many calling on the university management to strengthen security around the campus and improve emergency response systems.
Reacting to the incident, the university management said the situation was under control. The Director of Information and Public Relations, Zailani Bappa, said the Vice-Chancellor had visited the affected hostel, sympathised with students, and assured them that additional security measures would be implemented.
The Bauchi State Police Command has commenced investigation into the robbery and promised to track down the perpetrators. Police authorities said efforts were ongoing to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.
The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of students in tertiary institutions, as stakeholders continue to demand stronger security measures to protect campuses across the country.
